What are digital assets?
A digital asset is a thing on a computer that you can own, license, or sell — a file, a list, a domain, a token, a pile of photos. If you cannot point at it, it is a vibe.
Definition
A digital asset is something stored electronically that has value because you control it: you can use it, license it, or sell access to it. Photos. Code. A domain. A newsletter list you can export. A game build. A PDF. Sometimes a token.
A digital product is an asset with a storefront. Same file, plus a page, a price, and a way to deliver it. People mix the words. The IRS and your lawyer care about the difference when money shows up.
Types you actually bump into
Content and media
Articles, video, audio, design files. This site’s posts are assets. Google can cite them. So can models, which is why llms.txt exists.
Code and product
Repos, apps, game builds. Muk.gg is a product. The files behind it are assets. If only you can run them, they are a hobby with a backup problem.
Audience you can export
An email list with permission is an asset. Twitter followers are a lease. That is the whole plot of why I ditched Substack: I want a list that leaves with me.
Domains and accounts
A domain is property with a renewal date. Social accounts are property until the platform has a feeling. Treat logins like keys, not folklore.
Financial / crypto tokens
In finance, “digital assets” often means tokens. Fine. That is a different conversation from your Lightroom catalog. If you came here for coins, also see web3 newsletters and remember none of that is advice.
How to treat them like property
- Know who owns the copyright. Work-for-hire vs “I posted it.”
- Backups that are not one laptop.
- Licenses written down if someone else can use the file.
- Export the list. If you cannot export it, you do not own it.
A partnership that demands your raw list is asking for the asset, not a mention.
Valuation, without a fairy tale
Assets are worth what they earn or save. A folder of unused drafts is not a media empire. A list of 1,000 people who open is worth more than 40,000 mute followers. Measure like data analytics: money and kept humans, not files on disk.
FAQ
Is a website a digital asset?
The site, the content, the list, the domain — yes. The hosting tab is a bill.
Are NFTs digital assets?
They are a type of token that can represent a claim. Whether that claim is worth anything is a market question, not a vocabulary question.
Should I inventory them?
If you have a business, yes. A one-page list: what it is, where it lives, who can log in, whether you can export it. Boring. How companies survive a stolen laptop.
